"The Pack"

The pack contains a video tape, compact disc and suggested supportive classroom activities.  It is designed to provide an effective and flexible tool for use with pupils, aged 13 years upwards.  It also has considerable potential for use with older pupils and parents at school or within community groups.
A Discussion Group at Work
The video was scripted by the team and addicts themselves, as well as the addicts' friends and families, who all provided their own perspective.  The package title 'tHe buZZ' is a term used by addicts to describe the feeling they experience when they first used drugs.  The term was also
used by some of the young people to describe the feeling they experienced when they played live in a band, won a game of football or achieved some other personal success.  The video shows this contrast in a series of images aimed to provoke discussion.

Activities stress interactive methodology and promote opportunity for pupil ownership of learning.  Follow-up activities are intended to promote a flexible methodology, and teachers may 'pick and mix' as they feel is appropriate, choosingthe content of their lesson from the menu available.

The resource pack is to be adapted for use in individual settings.  A handout, 'What's tHe buZZ?' should be given to each pupil at the end of the lesson or session.  The young people who have inspired this pack highlighted the need for this information handout, which, as well as identifying national agencies, should also indicate the support agencies and alternatives available in the locality of the school where this resource is used.

A drug fact file 'What's the score?' is also included, as well as a series of activities for parents, based on the same principles, which may be used in drug awareness evenings.
The focus of this resource is on drug use in society today and of the potential consequences of drug misuse on individuals, their families and the community.  It also seeks to raise awareness of alternatives to drug
misuse, including local initiatives, the provision of amenities and the support available in the community with regard to drug issues.

'tHe buZZ' is a discussion-based workshop package building on current drugs education, written with young people for young people.
